This paper studies Cheong-hak-seo, and finds that when Korean is transcribed into Manchu, even though the phonetic systems of Manchu and Korean do not perfectly correspond, Korean transliterations of Manchu text maintain a "syllable symmetry", where each syllable in Manchu corresponds to one syllable in Korean transliteration. However, there are four types of syllables or syllable combinations, namely Vš, Ci'yV, Cu'wV, and Cio'wV, that violate the syllable symmetry rule and exhibit "syllable asymmetry" in transliteration. Interestingly, special cases of syllable symmetry are observed in Cu'wV. Through an investigation of the historical phonetics of Jurchen language and the principles of Korean transliteration, it is found that Manchu syllable Vš, which is actually closer to a bisyllabic pronunciation, is thus transliterated into two syllables in Korean. On the other hand, Manchu syllable combinations Ci'yV and Cio'wV, although represented by two syllables in written form, are considered monosyllabic with glide consonants in actual pronunciation, resulting in one syllable in Korean transliteration for two syllables in Manchu. As for Cu'wV, which has two variant pronunciations [Cu'wV] and [CwV] in Ching-era Manchu, corresponding Korean transliterations also exhibit variation with either two syllables or one syllable.
